About the course

The Intellectual Property (IP) Intro course – practical intellectual property protection – is designed as a comprehensive introductory education in IP issues, going beyond superficial online publications full of ambiguities. The aim is for participants to understand not only the theory, but above all the practical aspects, risks, and strategies of intellectual property protection. The course combines legal knowledge with a business perspective and helps companies and creators defend the value they create.

Key benefits

  • Protecting company value: In today's era of digitalization and Industry 4.0 (and with the advent of 5.0), intellectual property often constitutes a significant part of a company's business value. The course helps companies understand what assets they actually have legal control over and how to minimize the risk of value loss in the event of a dispute or sale.
  • Prevention of legal disputes: Many companies face litigation or licensing disputes due to poorly drafted contracts, inaccurate copyright protection, or the absence of clear transfers of rights. This course will enable participants to anticipate mistakes and avoid costly legal battles.
  • Improved readiness for investors/exit/valuation: During investor negotiations or company sales, IP portfolios are often scrutinized in detail. If IP protection is unclear or insufficient, the value of the company can drop significantly. This course helps guide organizations toward ensuring legal clarity and maximum IP value for such situations.
  • All in one package: In addition to theory, the course includes specific examples, tips and tricks, contractual provisions, a cross-border perspective (international IP), and an audit approach that allows organizations to review their own IP status.

Themes and structure

  • Identifying IP vs. other components of a product or service: You will learn to distinguish between what constitutes intellectual property (software, graphics, know-how) and what is merely standard functionality, and how to transform innovations into IP assets.

  • International protection: When you use copyright only in the Czech Republic, it is often not enough — the course explains the differences between jurisdictions, international registries, and protection limits.

  • Industrial rights — patents, utility models, trademarks: What is a patent, when is a utility model used, how does a trademark work — and what strategy to choose in different industries.

  • Copyright — nuances and transfer of rights: Who is actually the author, what scope of rights can be transferred (not everything can be transferred), and how to set up contracts to cover the actual intentions of the organization.

  • Contractual protection: How to include confidentiality (NDA), non-competition clauses, licensing agreements, transfers of rights, penalties for breach – what is important and what is common practice.

  • IP transfers and licensing: How to structure a license, when and how to transfer rights, what needs to be taken care of to avoid losing control over your IP.

  • IP audit & risk assessment: The course includes elements of an audit approach — reviewing the status of the IP portfolio, identifying weaknesses, and recommending corrective measures.
