ISO 14001 is the latest edition of the Enviromental Management standard. The standard is generic and can be applied to any organisation. All ISO standards (currently more than 17,000) are periodically reviewed to ensure they remain up-to-date and relevant. Decisions are made to confirm, withdraw or revise standards on an ongoing basis.

It specifies a framework of control for an Environmental Management System and is the only ISO 14000 standard against which it is currently possible to be certified by an external certification body. However, it does not in itself state specific environmental performance criteria.

Integrating ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

Integrating management systems standards can increase focus while reducing the potential for confusion. Elements of ISO 9001 can be enhanced with corresponding components of ISO 14001. When adding ISO 14001 components to those of ISO 9001, planning must be expanded to deal with environmental impacts, and the inspection and test systems modified to cover environmental conformance. The organization must meet the environmental expectations of customers and the government, and it must incorporate environmental management elements into internal audit programs and training sessions. ISO 14001 can be integrated with standards besides ISO 9001 in order to provide synergy with other systems, such as OHSAS 18001 and ISO 13485.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  How does it work?
ISO 14001 does not specify levels of environmental performance - so how, you ask yourself, can it improve things? Well, if it specified levels of environmental performance they would obviously have to be specific to your business activity - which would call for a specific EMS standard for each businesses. That's not the intention. ISO has many other standards dealing with specific environmental issues.

  Which organisation can be used?
ISO 14001 should be used by any organization that wishes to set up, improve, or maintain an environmental management system to conform with its established environmental policy and requirements. The requirements of the standard can be incorporated into any environmental management system, the extent to which is determined by several factors including the organization’s industry, environmental policy, products and service offerings, and location.

Can ISO 14001 be integrated with ISO 9001 and other management systems?
ISO 14001 shares many common management system concepts, principles and requirements with ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 system standards. While the technical requirements of these standards may differ, the management and administrative requirements of these standards are very much the same in many cases. Similar clauses include: management review, document control, and corrective and preventive action.
